Nokia 5 is perfectly balanced smartphone with variety of useful features and very solid build quality
The brand new Nokia 5 - great value for money smartphone |
Nokia 5 is out on the market and it seems like a big deal for the tech world. Together with Nokia 3 and 6 the 5 is Nokia's first serious attempt to invade the Android smartphone markets. With very solid build quality and affordable price Nokia 5 is truly balanced smartphone with nice set of features, most of which we will cover in our consumer review today. Produced by the Finnish Company HMD Global this phone promises to earn back some of the previous glory of what used to be technology giant.
Build Quality and Design
The nicely curved unibody design of the 5 is nothing different from what we see in this price range these days. What impresses most is the feel of a quality made product. The 5.2-inch display fits nicely in the aluminium unibody and thankfully the phone itself is not too thin so it fits perfectly in the hand (even if no case is added). And while speaking for the display we should mention it is an HD Corning Gorilla Glass display with resolution of 1280x720 pixels.
Nokia 5 is offered in four different colors - Blue, Black, Silver and Gold. I expect the black version to be most popular around man buyers while the golden version would be more appealing for the girls (well, that's my personal guess).
Inexpensive but functional
Even though the Nokia 5 does not cost a lot (under $250) it comes with a nice set of features that we usually see in much more expensive devices. One of these is the built-in fingerprint sensor which does a great job for quick unlocking and authorizing. Here are the most important technical details that you should now about the new Nokia 5:
- Octa-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 430 processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 16GB internal storage - expandable to 128GB via microSD
- Fully-laminated and polarized 5.2 inch IPS LCD HD display with 2.5D sculpted Corning® Gorilla® Glass
- 13 MP autofocus rear camera (f/2.0 sensor) and 8 MP front-facing camera (selfie-camera as they call it these days) with dual-tone LED flash

- NFC
- Bluetooth 4.1

Competition
With the 5 Nokia is entering quite a busy segment where a variety of competitors fight for customers willing to spend up to $300 for a capable smartphone. I think the biggest competition would come from well known 'fighters' like the extremely successful Samsung Galaxy J5 which already has its 2017 version released recently.
Huawei and Xiaomi also have couple of strong competitors in this segment in the face of Xiaomi Redmi 4A and the Huawei P10 lite.

Verdict
Many fans were waiting for years until Nokia released something that could really give big manufacturers reasons to worry for the future of their domination on the smartphone market and the Finnish manufacturer finally delivered. If I have to be 100% honest though I don't thing Samsung or LG would be worried after those first attempts from Nokia and it is quite expected after so many years of struggle.
Nokia 5 is a good phone that many of you would like but only if expectations are not set too high.
